The Crossroads Greenway Network

The Crossroads is a plan to unite Hudson County trail proposals as a regional network of shared-use pathways that align with the East Coast Greenway.

At the center of this vision, the Bergen Arches serve as a critical missing link—an opportunity to connect major, already funded projects into a continuous and transformative corridor.

To the west, the Essex-Hudson Greenway is actively advancing under the leadership of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), converting a former rail line into miles of accessible open space. To the east, the Sixth Street Embankment represents another significant investment in urban green infrastructure and public access. The Bergen Arches sit directly between these two projects, uniquely positioned to bridge them together.

Framed as the “Crossroads,” the Bergen Arches mark the convergence of these two ends—linking the Essex-Hudson Greenway to the west with the future connection from Mill Creek through the Sixth Street Embankment to the Hudson River waterfront. Completing this connection would unlock a continuous 17-mile trail from Montclair to Jersey City’s waterfront.

In this context, the Bergen Arches are more than a standalone project—they are the keystone of a regional system, transforming a series of individual investments into a unified, accessible, and impactful network.

East Coast Greenway

The East Coast Greenway is a developing 3,000-mile trail system that connects major cities from Maine to Florida, linking urban centers through safe, accessible pathways for cyclists and pedestrians.

By activating the Bergen Arches, we can create a seamless connection between these corridors—linking communities across municipal boundaries and establishing a continuous route for walking, biking, and recreation. This connection would not only enhance local mobility, but also integrate Jersey City and the surrounding region into the larger East Coast Greenway network.

Designed as the “spine” of active transportation along the East Coast, it provides an alternative to car travel, promotes healthy lifestyles, and connects communities to parks, waterfronts, and economic centers.

In New Jersey, key segments of the Greenway are already taking shape, including the Essex-Hudson Greenway and other regional trail investments. However, gaps remain—particularly in dense urban areas like Hudson County. The Bergen Arches represent a rare opportunity to close one of these critical gaps by utilizing an existing, grade-separated corridor that can support a safe and uninterrupted route.
